A Massive Payout

In May 2018, Michigan State University agreed to pay $500 million in settlements to more than 300 alleged victims of Nassar. The settlement included $425 million to the victims (an average of about $1.28 million per victim) and the setting aside of $75 million in a trust fund for any victims who choose to come forward at a later date.

Child Sexual Abuse Committed By School Officials

Michigan, like many other states, has seen instances of school personnel allegedly committing childhood sexual abuse. In January 2019, a principal at a middle school in the northern area of the state was charged with five counts of sexual abuse. Some of the students involved were younger than 10.

The State of Michigan disciplined 30 health care professionals for either sexual assault or misconduct between May 2017 and May 2018. One offender was a high school athletic trainer, and another was an occupational therapist who sexually assaulted a patient suffering from a traumatic brain injury.
